Worth it!

Hey everyone. Welcome to Cancer Grad. In today’s episode I am going to be sharing with you my final results for the MonaLisa Touch vaginal laser treatment, which is used to treat that little dryness and pain during sex because of menopause. Aha, you heard me right. I have menopause.

Breast Cancer & Medical Menopause

For those of you who don’t know me, I am Aniela, I’m a breast cancer graduate and the co-founder of Cancer Grad where we are redefining the cancer experience.

So before we start this, you’re probably wondering why would you get to the inside of your vagina lasered? That’s crazy and I agree with you. The reason is because, in 2015 February, I got my last period ever. It was in the midst of chemotherapy. And then after I finished chemo, I had a complete hysterectomy done preventatively because I had the BRCA1 genetic mutation and my mom died of ovarian cancer the year before. So yeah.

Vaginal Dryness, Painful Sex & Loss of Vaginal Elasticity

I am in medical menopause and with that comes pain during intercourse, vaginal dryness, loss of vaginal elasticity and no sex drive. And beyond that, also I get hot flashes like I am getting right now because I’m in menopause.

What MonaLisa Touch Treatment Feels Like

And the process of getting this done, it did not hurt on the inside of the vagina. As the laser is inside, it feels like a buzzing, vibrating feeling. And as it’s coming to the opening of the vagina, it starts to warm up. Then on the outside, so the run, the clitoris, the labia, the perineum. It feels like someone is smacking you with a rubber band, but that lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute at most. And when I had my final treatment done, he used an intense numbing cream. We decided to experiment, and I felt nothing, so.

Oh my goodness, worth it.

You can deal with it. The first time you pee afterwards, you should know it’s going to be a little raw. A cold, wet paper towel works wonders. It’s kind of just cools it off and then you’re also going to have, or at least I did, a watery discharge and like a pink watery discharge. So wear a panty liner. After 24 hours, the vagina is magic at how fast it heals. No more pain and the water discharge is gone and after 48 hours, I’m pretty sure you can put things back up your lady bits. But check with the doctor just to make sure.

What to Expect After Monalisa Touch Treatments

Oh, I know what you all really want to know are what were the results. So after the first treatment, when I would wipe after peeing it did not feel like sandpaper anymore, which was a huge improvement and there was a little more suppleness to the vagina. Still was getting micro-tearing if I tried to have sex, but I could see the improvement.

Second treatment, again, a little more improvement. Third treatment, the micro-tearing during sex stopped, and that was my main reason for going in and getting this done. So Mona Lisa Touch really does work if you have vaginal dryness or elasticity issues caused by menopause. But I have to tell you that it did not turn my vagina into a slip and slide. It is more like a mist tent.

Mona Lisa Touch really does work if you have vaginal dryness or elasticity issues caused by menopause.

Issues Monalisa Touch Treatments Can’t Fix

And going into this, be aware that this isn’t some magical wand that’s going to fix all of your vadge issues. I still don’t have a sex drive because that’s hormone based, and I have no hormones. Also going through the MonaLisa treatment, as the skin started to improve, I realized I have other issues in conjunction with that. They were causing and still are causing pain during intercourse.

The main one being vaginismus, which I lovingly like to refer to as Pavlov’s Vagina, but rather than drooling, the vagina clenches up and rather than a bell being rung, it is a penis. So what I’m doing now is I started getting pelvic floor treatments done once a week for eight weeks. I do Kegel exercises three times a day. I still need to dilate to kind of just relax that area up and stretch it out a bit and I use a lubricant to get started.

If your issue is vaginal dryness or elasticity issues caused by menopause, yes, it definitely works.

Will Monalisa Touch Treatment Work For You?

So you might be asking, is all of this worth it? My husband says, “Yes, MonaLisa was worth it.” I say, “Maybe.” If your issue is vaginal dryness or elasticity issues caused by menopause, yes, it definitely works. If you have other conjoining issues like I do, you need to go in with an open mind with that. Not expecting this to fix everything, but realizing you might have to find other ways to fix each of these problems. Because just like a waterpark, I don’t care how wonderful your waterpark is, if the front gate is locked, no one is going to be playing.

Seek Medical Advice: Talk to Your Doctor or Gynecologist

This is about your vagina and it’s not going to be a one size fits all situation. Keep talking to your doctor. If your doctor is not listening, find a new doctor. Find a sex counselor who has dealt with cancer issues. Go to a sex store and try different vibrators. Find stuff that works for you. Now, don’t give up. Keep at this and keep communicating with your partner and be patient with yourself.
